Volcanic activity continues at Home Reef [1]

Volcanic activities at Home Reef Volcano in Tonga is continuing and thermal anomaly is still observed up to the present day, the Geohazards Team of the Tonga Geological Services reported today.
“Over the last 48 hours,Home Reef has maintained a moderate Volcanic Radiative Power (VRP) on the MIROVA scale.
“The Sentinel-2 image captured on January 12, 2025, shows that the island has retained its current size since its last recorded growth on January 2nd, 2025. However, we still see no indicators for major explosive eruptions at this point,” stated the Volcano watch team.
“The volcanic activity poses low risk to the Vava’u and Ha’apai communities. However, all Mariners are advised to remain at least 2 nautical miles away from Home Reef until further notice.”
The last detected thermal anomaly was 14th January, 2025 at 03:10 AM, local time.
Home Reef is located 25 km southwest of Late Island, 22 km northeast of Lateiki (Metis Shoal) and 75 km northwest of Mo’unga’one Island at Latitude & Longitude 18.992°S & 174.775°W.
Monitoring of the eruption is ongoing daily.
Intermittent Volcanic activity at Home Reef has been monitored by the TGS in 2022, 2023 and continuously since June 2024.
