Two villages, ‘Utulau and Koulo, each received a Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) contract, signed today by the Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr. Inagaki Hisao.
"Today’s two new projects have different objectives based on the immediate needs of each community" said Mr. Inagaki.
This GGP assistance includes the upgrading of ‘Utulau’s water supply system in Tongatapu, and the construction of an evacuation center and community hall for Koulo in Liukafa, Ha’apai.
"For a long time, the people of ‘Utulau have faced difficult challenges in attaining a sufficient supply of water. In particular, residents of the new residential area have been relying only on rainwater as a source of water."
The Koulo community hall is said to be an evacuation center, equipped with a small kitchen, toilets and showers for comfort during evacuation times. However, the center will also serve as a place where youth groups and women can host events.
Mr. Inagaki signed the contracts with recipients’ representatives Mr. Tevita Kaufana, Chairperson, Koulo Community Committee and Mr. Viliami Po’ese, Chairperson, ‘Utulau Village Water Committee.
Japan’s GGP have assisted communities in Tonga, since the 1990’s. Interested communities on Japan’s GGP are welcome to inquire to the Embassy of Japan in Nuku’alofa, for application requirements.
