Police arrest 13 people in Tongatapu drug raids [1]

Tonga Police have arrested 13 people from drug raids at multiple locations in Tongatapu, from 19 to 20 May. The Police also seized forty-two (42) cannabis packs, cannabis leaves, cannabis seeds and drug utensils in these raids.
The 13 people who were arrested includes four females and nine males between the age of fourteen to forty-one years.
Police reported that the suspects remain remanded and are charged with possession of illicit drugs and drug utensils.
"The abuse of drugs carries significant consequences, not only affecting the health of individuals but also placing a heavy burden on families, friends, and communities," Police stated.
Under the Illicit Drugs Control Act, penalties range from fines of $10,000 to $1,000,000, and potential jail sentences from three years to life imprisonment.
