Speaker suspends parliamentary employee over illicit drugs allegations [1]

An employee of the Legislative Assembly has been suspended over their alleged involvement with illicit drugs, pending a formal police criminal investigation.
The Office of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga reported on Friday, 17 May, that the Speaker had suspended an employee on Wednesday, 15 May, over serious illicit drugs allegations amid a Police investigation.
"The Speaker and the Office of the Legislative Assembly is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability. It will not tolerate or condone any activities involving illicit drugs. The actions of this employee are not representative of the values of the Legislative Assembly and this office," Parliament office stated.
"The Office of the Legislative Assembly will continue to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability in all aspects of its operations."
King concerns for illicit drugs spreading
The King's speech on the opening of Parliament on Thursday, 16 May, expressed a concern over the spreading of illicit drugs, in families and communities in Tonga.
“It is urgent to stop the spread of the use of illicit drugs,” King Tupou VI told Members of Parliament.
