First medals for Tonga at the Pacific Games 2023 were won by Yasmin 'Aho (Men -100kg) and Sailosi 'Ealelei (Men +100kg) with their bronze medals in judo yesterday in Solomon Islands.
The judokas could earn more medals today (21 November) in the Open weight category, which is also the last day of judo at SOL2023. Finetu’ui Moala of the Tonga Judo Association said, “All three judokas will be eager to add some silverware in the Open weight category. Coach 'Akapei Latu now has to ensure the three athletes recover well physically and mentally for the fights.”
Finetu‘ui said the bronze medals were special.
“This is special for Yasmin as it is his first medal at his first ever Pacific Games or Pacific Mini Games. For Sailosi, it is a wonderful addition to his two silver medals at VAN2017 PMG and 1 bronze medal at the SAM2019 PG.”
A third judoka, Kafoa Hala (Men -90kg) did not win his repechage to have a shot at the bronze medal.
Lord Vaea, Tonga's Minister for Ministry of Internal Affairs (the ministry in charge of sports), was there to witness the fights and also took part in the medal ceremony.
