A 6.7Mw earthquake woke-up sleeping residents of Tonga last night at 11:27pm local time, 2 July. It was felt strongly in Vava'u, and more lightly in Ha'apai and Tongatapu.
The earthquake was centred 143 km northwest of Neiafu and 370 km north of Nuku’alofa, with a depth of 225 km, for a duration of 15 seconds.
The preliminary magnitude was 6.7Mw, Tonga's Geohazard unit of the Natural Resources Division under the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources reported today.
Its Mercalli Intensity was rated “IV, light shaking with no damage”.
However, the quake frightened people in Vava'u.
“We heard the rumbling sound of the earthquake from deep within the earth, moments before we felt it,” Dadyana Siasau from Fungamisi, Neiafu, told Matangi Tonga.
“It was a strong and long shake, it definitely woke the whole island up. Everybody felt it,” she said.
"Water bottles fell off from the table, when the house shook, and the noises from the shaking windows were loud. We thought the roof would fall. It was frightening we almost ran outside."
Also, there was a 5.0 magnitude earthquake with a 44km depth felt in Neiafu earlier the same day.
At 23:36 the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Honolulu HI gave notice that based on all available date there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake.
At 23:40 the Tonga Meteorological Office advised there was no tsunami threat for Tonga and outer islands from the earthquake.
