Tatafu Moeaki, Tonga's former Minister of Finance was appointed by government on 20 December 2022 as the new Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga.

According to a Press Statement from the National Reserve Bank, the selection of Moeaki was recommended by Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, Tonga’s Minister of Finance “in consultation with the Board of the Reserve Bank”.

Moeaki was a former Director of the National Reserve Bank Board from 2013 to 2016, when he was the chief economic adviser to the Government and the Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Finance.

He is a former CEO for the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development, Liaison for the World Bank, Tonga Country Head for the Asian Development Bank, a former member of Parliament and Tonga’s Minister of Finance until 10 August 2022, when he was removed from his seat as the Tongtapu People’s Representative No. 4.

His election was voided in the outcome of a judgement of an election petition, which established that he committed two offences of bribery under section 21 of the Electoral Act, in the lead-up to the November 2021 General Election.

On 6 May 2022 the Supreme Court of Tonga certified that Moeaki's election was void. He lost a subsequent appeal against the certification.
