Fifteen participants from the Tonga Red Cross Society received their recognition as Pacific First Aid Instructors, after completing a training course from 10-18 October in Nuku'alofa.
Hosted by the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and supported by New Zealand Red Cross (NZRC). This is the first training since the border closed, during the Covid-19 pandemic, recognising the importance of preparing and equipping staff and volunteers with the basics on First Aid knowledge as Tonga approaches the cyclone season.
First Aid Delegate Mrs Lesley Jacobson of New Zealand Red Cross said first aid is the first help someone gets when they are ill or injured.
"First aid saves lives."
The Red Cross movement considers the safety of its responders by educating and training them to provide immediate assistance at all times, but especially during disasters.
Senior First Aid Officer Mr Riaz Khan said Tonga is among many other Pacific National Societies who have completed and passed this First Aid Test.
TRCS Secretary-General Sione Taumoefolau said this training will equip the first aid instructor with latest skills and knowledge to serve the community in Tonga.
"This training developed more commitment from individuals who volunteered their time for the first aid sector. I am grateful for the completion of this training to the assurance of first aid instructor to conduct their duty to the best of their ability to save a live in future."
Participants included Tonga Red Cross from Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua branch managers, along with two selected core volunteers to support each officer in charge in conducting first aid trainings in their respective islands.
Meanwhile, TRCS has four Senior First Aid Instructors. They have completed an International Virtual Course Refresher of First Aid training hosted by IFRC Global First Aid Reference Centre.
Tonga Red Cross Society remains as the only First Aid service provider for Tonga.
