Additional relief supplies from Japan arrived in Nuku'alofa on the OHSUMI defence ship yesterday, Feb. 9, to assist those affected by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption and tsunamis on Jan. 15.
Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Munenaga said this was the first visit by a Japan Maritime Self-Defence ship to Tonga in our history.
Supplies delivered include 10t of water, 60 high-pressure cleaners, and other equipment to support Tonga’s restoration efforts.
The two helicopters on the ship will also help to deliver drinking water to ‘Eua, Ha’apai, and Vava’u.
“Given the situation of COVID-19 pandemic, the OHSUMI unloaded all the cargo at Vuna Wharf in a strictly contactless manner and all cargo will undergo 72 hours of quarantine,” said HE Mr Munenaga.
Japan had already delivered emergency relief supplies four times on its defence force aircrafts.
HE Mr Munenaga said Japan is pleased to be able to support the people and the Government of Tonga.
