Tongan athletes were thrilled to receive funding today, 24 June, to help them prepare for the Olympic games to be held in Tokyo, Japan next month.

TASANOC President, Michael Bloomfield provided cheques to Malia Paseka (Taekwondo) and Ronald Fotofili (Athletics) and sporting federation representatives at their office in Haveluloto.

Michael said funding of AUD$34,390 was provided to Tonga under a program by the Australian Government and the Australian Olympic Committee.

The aim of the program is to support athletes from 11 Pacific countries including Tonga prepare for the games. Many Pacific athletes, have been facing significant challenges in completing final training programs and qualifying events due to the impact of COVID-19.

“I wish the athletes all the best in their preparations for the games.”

So far, Tonga has Olympic spots in swimming, athletics, taekwondo, and weightlifting.

Taekwondo athlete Malia Paseka was grateful for the financial assistance from Australia.

“I would like to thank Australia for the funds which is a very big help for me to prepare. Especially, to pay for training expenses such as equipment, and even to help pay my coach as well as athletes that are helping me.”

“So, this is a big opportunity for me with the funds I have received and I thank God that I am a part of this funding assistance program.”

Ronald Fotofili will represent Tonga in the 100 metres sprints in Tokyo.

“I am so happy I have been given this funding opportunity. I am grateful as it will assist me greatly with my preparation training that can help me get better results,” he said.

TASANOC will announce the final list of athletes to represent Tonga before they depart for Japan on July 13.
