HM King Tupou VI today commissioned the Fangatā Military Camp of His Majesty's Armed Forces in 'Eua.
Accompanied by the Queen Nanasipau’u, they toured the facility which was constructed under a Defence Cooperation Program between the governments of Tonga and Australia.
Australia's High Commissioner, HE Mr. Adrian Morrison said this was another milestone in Australia and Tonga's relationship, and in the defence partnership with HMAF.
“This a partnership that sees us working together to deliver major infrastructure projects such as the Range Control facility, office building and accommodation here at Fangatā,” he said.
Other projects included the refurbishment of the Masefield Navy Base and Taliai Military Camp as well as the construction of a Northern Command faculty in Vava’u - a facilty that will support more intensive patrolling by the navy.
"Our partnership is longstanding. Forged by our participation in the two world wars of the last century."
Prime Minister Hon Dr Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa extended Tonga's gratitude to the support from the Australian Government.
“Australia is valuable partner in defence and security development of Tonga. This camp will enable HMAF to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief for the people in 'Eua,” he said.
The design and construction was carried out by HMAF's 1st Construction Engineering Squadron.
