A 16-Toyota HIACE seater vehicle to transport disabled students was handed over to the Tonga Red Cross Society from the Government of Japan on Friday, May 7.
Red Cross sought Japan's assistance to better transport the disabled students to and from their classes, at the 'Ofa Tui mo e 'Amanaki Center, at the Red Cross compound in Nuku'alofa.
The vehicle will also enable more effective home visits to students.
Japan’s Ambassador HE Mr Munenaga Kensaku, said the vehicle will help Tonga Red Cross Society in effectively carrying out social services to people with disabilities by providing transportation for the students at the center.
"While, I strongly hope that this vehicle will facilitate the activities of Tonga Red Cross, what is more important is the devotion and commitment of the people in charge. I’d like to take this opportunity to applaud the people of Tonga Red Cross for their efforts, and to thank them for their great cooperation with the Embassy of Japan in formulating this GGP project."
The Ambassador also expressed his heartfelt sympathy for the loss of Tonga Red Cross communications officer, the late Polikalepo Kefu.
Gratitude was extended by the Acting Chairperson for Tonga Red Cross Board, Drew Havea to Japan for their generous donation.
The vehicle which cost around USD53,000 was funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
