An upgraded water supply system for people on the western Hihifo District was handed over to Prince Ata on February 23.
A grant of USD70,859 from Japan, helped to install a new pumping system, that included one electric and one diesel pump for better distribution of water to the various villages at this district.
Japan's Ambassador Designate, HE Mr Munenaga Kensaku heard that the people in the villages of Ha'atafu, Kanokupolu, 'Ahau and Kolovai, all under the Hihifo Water Supply Committee, often suffered water shortages due to regular malfunctions of the water pump.
He said through this project their water supply system had been greatly improved and they would now enjoy a stable supply of clean water.
"I trust that the people in charge will take good care of the new pump system. A good care or good maintenance is crucial for any project. Without it, the improved level of your living standard as well as the future generations well-being cannot be secured."
Prince Ata extended their deep gratitude for this assistance from the people and Government of Japan.
“I have no doubt this is just the beginning of a work relationship between the district, Government of Tonga and the Government of Japan,” he said.
The project was funded under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) a small grant scheme that helps ensure people access their basic human needs, such as water.
