Japan funds projects for Tonga Fire and Health sectors [1]

Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, grant contracts were signed in Nuku'alofa on January 22.

Two projects to improve the Tonga Fire and Emergency Services and the Healthy system, will be funded by Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, after grant contracts were signed on January 22 in Nuku'alofa.

The assistance includes the provision to the Fire and Emergency Services a 7,000L water tanker truck at US$63,417. The other project will upgrade the health clinic building in Ma'ufanga, with assistance of US$90,800.

Japan’s Ambassador Designate, HE Munenaga Kensaku in a keynote address said that the first project aimed to improve the capability of the Fire Department to respond to emergencies of fires as well as to deal with the aftermath of natural disasters.

"We hope that this project will help your office to better serve the people of Tonga."

Ma'ufanga Community Health Clinic

The second will build the Ma'ufanga Community Health Clinic, which will provide a new medical facility for the Ministry of Health to strengthen their services for the people of the community. 

"Today’s two projects will enable the relevant services to reach the communities more effectively. I believe that, through such efforts and activities, you can achieve your vital social roles and missions of public service."

The signatories were carried out by the Japanese Embassy Counsellor, Mr Kamada Yasuhiko and recipients, including the Director of Health Dr Siale 'Akau'ola and Fire Commissioner Tu'ihalamaka.

Fire Commissioner Tu'ihalamaka extended their heartfelt thanks to Japan for their generous assistance.

Meanwhile, the Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) was introduced in 1990 to respond to the challenges of obtaining basic human needs for communities at the grass-roots level throughout Tonga. 

Also present at the signing was the Minister for Finance Hon. Dr Tevita Lavemaau.
