Today is the anniversary of King George (Siaosi) Taufa’ahau Tupou I, Tonga’s first Christian King and founder of the modern Kingdom of Tonga, which will be observed with a public holiday on Monday 7 December.

It has been 175 years since the King started his reign on 4 December 1845, uniting the Christian Kingdom under the Tu’i Kanokupolu dynasty.

Taufa’ahau Tupou I is credited for helping spread Christianity throughout the Pacific and protecting Tonga from foreign domination.

The king is also famed for his longevity, fighting in many battles and surviving numerous epidemics.

Tupou I was 96-years-old when he passed away in 1893.
