Table tennis is catching on at Niuafo’ou and Niuatoputapu High Schools, with sports equipment delivered by the Tonga Table Tennis Federation last week.
CEO for Tonga Table Tennis Federation Netina Latu took the equipment to the remote islands, on the MV ‘Otuanga’ofa ferry on July 28.
Students have received sets of tables, balls, bats and manuals on how to play the sport.
President for Tonga Table Tennis, Hasiloni Fungavai, said this program aimed to teach table tennis to students aged 8-14 years and to develop their skills in sports.
“By learning to play young they can develop a passion and find a talent and can secure opportunities to compete internationally for Tonga,” he said.
ITTF-Oceania funded the equipment and the trip to the islands.
Other islands groups in Tonga also received the same equipment last year.
