A three-year-old girl died on May 27 when she was accidentally run over by a reversing vehicle at her home in Niutoua.

Police at Mu'a said today the accident ocurred at around 9:00am.

It was reported the victim's uncle came to reverse the vehicle on the driveway. The child was believed to have been inside the house.

The uncle did not know she was outside and behind the vehicle, when he ran her over.

She was rushed to Vaiola Hospital and was confirmed to have passed away.

Police said, the victim from New Zealand had come to Tonga with a grandparent. She was waiting to return home, when Tonga's borders re-open.

The driver has not been charged at this stage.

An investigation continues.
