The Electoral Commission has recruited the assistance of Tonga Police to investigate a complaint lodged by a voter on behalf of Dr Netatua Pelesikoti Taufatofua.

Supervisor for Elections, Pita Vuki, said today, the complaint submitted was only a letter of allegation, with no supporting evidence that could assist in the investigation.

He said, they had asked the police to investigate the allegations.

No set time frame had been set for an outcome, and the investigation needed to be first completed.

The complaint was submitted by 'Eliesa Fifita and Kolomotu'a voters who called for urgent and thorough investigation of the By-Election held in the Tongatapu 1 constituency on November 28.

'Eliesa said, he was asked by Dr Netatua's supporters to lodge the complaint because they were not satisfied with the way the election was conducted.

The complaint was submitted to the Electoral Commission on December 5.

It was alleged that 20 plus new voters unlawfully voted; that election administrators had allowed people to vote without sighting their identifications; as well as allegations of threats and Intimidation of voters.

The Tongatapu 1 By-Election was won by Siaosi Pohiva with 1160 votes, only 16 votes ahead of Dr Netatua, who had a total of 1144, for the seat left vacant by the death of the former Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva.
