King George Tupou V ascended to the Tongan throne on September 11 following the death of his father King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV in the early hours of the same morning (Tonga time).
The new king will celebrate his 59th birthday on May 4 2007, three months before his coronation on August 1.
The Tonga government also announced this morning that November 4, traditionally known as Constitutional Day for Tongans will be officially commemorated as Tonga's National Day, starting next year. On November 4, 1875 king George Tupou I proclaimed Tonga's constitution, and wished that it be observed by the Tongans as a day of unbounded joy and to be joyfully commemorated by generations to come.
