Tongans urged to pray for dying King [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, August 16, 2006 - 00:00.  Updated on Thursday, September 5, 2013 - 17:02.

The Prime Minister called on church leaders, prayer groups and for all Tongans to pray for the king tonight. He said he had been informed that the health of the king had deteriorated this evening.

The King has been in Auckland since April because of his poor health, but returned to Tonga briefly in early July for his 88th birthday on July 4. He then returned to Auckland on July 6 and has been there ever since.

The tone of the Prime Minister's announcement this evening was that only god can save the king now.

A special moment for professed Christians, King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV and Queen Mata'aho when they were baptised in the River Jordan in 1990.
