67% of registered voters turn out for general election [1]

67% of registered Tongan voters turned out to cast their votes in the General Election 2017 held on November 16.

A total of 59,003 people registered to vote in the November 16 election but only 39,523 turned out in the 17 constituencies to vote for their People’s Representative, with winners announced in their consituencies last night. Each voter has one vote for a candidate in their own constituency.

Tongatapu 3 had the most registered voters with 4765 however only 3207 voted. 

The two small islands of the Niuas with the lowest number of registered voters at 1138 had a good turn out of 75%, when 857 voted.

Tongatapu 2 had the lowest percentage of registered voters who voted. Out of 3676 voters, only 1541 voted which means around 42% did not vote.

However, the Supervisor for Elections Pita Vuki said today the total voter turn out in this election was higher than the 2014 election.

However, a lot less had registered to vote then with 51,447 in total.
