Although there were 40 arrests related to alcohol on Saturday night, and heavy traffic following the Mate Ma’a Tonga’s historical win over New Zealand, Tonga Police were generally pleased with public behaviour, Tonga Police Commissoner Stephen Caldwell said today.

Thousands of fans poured out onto the streets to celebrate after Tonga's historic win in the pool match at the Rugby World Cup.

The arrests made toward the end of the night, on alcohol related offences, were only a slight increase in arrests made on most weekends, which averages around 30 people.

“It was a well led and well-resourced police operation, with police officers exercising patience and professionalism, recognizing the significance of the occasion,” said Police Commissioner Caldwell.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and we’re calling on all fans to continue respecting the law while supporting our team.”

Lebanon

The Mate Ma’a Tonga will play Lebanon this Saturday, 18 November in the quarter finals.

“We are calling on everybody to be safe and plan ahead for the safety of your family and friends if you’re going to be out on the road.”

People and children who celebrated the last win were taking risks sitting and standing on bonnets and roofs of vehicles while travelling.

“Passengers are meant to be in a vehicle not on it and we ask people to look at danger to their loved ones if they fall off the bonnet,” he said.

“We wish our team all the best in their endeavours to bring the cup home, but while we enjoy the occasion, I ask that people respect the law and respect each other.”
