A new ice machine system for fresh catch and water tanks were handed over to the people on ‘Uiha Island in Ha’apai from the Government of Japan, on October 5.
The Japanese Ambassador HE Mr Yukio Numata said the ice machine system would boost the fisheries industry in this area by allowing the people to have easier access to flake ice.
The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Project (GGP) stands with the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals, that no one will be left behind. Assisting communities deprived of basic goods and services due to geographical disadvantages in order to accelerate development is the important purpose of the scheme, he said.
The ice machine and installation of 10 water tanks cost USD$76,856.
The Sosaieti 'Uhila 'a ‘Uiha mo Felemea had sought Japan’s assistance due to the high demand of flake ice to preserve marine products in ‘Uiha and other neighboring island communities, so that their fresh catch can be sent to large markets in Lifuka and Nuku’alofa.
Japan’s assistance eases daily difficulties of not only the 550 people living on ‘Uiha Island, but also to more than 2,000 people living in neighboring outer islands in Ha'apai.
The community was thankful and happy with the assistance.
