Tongan brothers, Semisi (19) and Matavao Fanguna (20) have won the Open Mens Tennis Doubles against Tahiti in the Fiji Tattslotto Open Tennis Championships 2017 held in Denarau, 24 – 28 May.

They were part of Tonga’s team of four, including Silema Toutai (28) and Kendra Paea (15), all seeded as the top five players in the tournament, playing in the open category.

The players also took part in the Mixed Doubles, Mens Singles, Ladies Doubles and Ladies Singles.

In the Open Mixed Doubles, Semisi partnered with Silema making it to the finals where they lost to Samoa in two sets 7-5, 7-5.

In the Mens Singles, Matavao reached the semi-finals only to be defeated by Tahiti in two sets, 6-0, 7-5.

Semisi reached the quarter finals in the Mens Singles, going down to American Samoa in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.

In the Ladies Singles, Silema reached the quarter finals and lost although she pushed her Fijian opponent to three sets, 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-4.

The youngest player, Kendra, did not make it past the round robin against Fiji.

The players will take part in Tonga’s Open Tennis Tournament in September and said they are looking forward to representing Tonga at the Mini Games held in Vanuatu in December.
