No tsunami threat from 'Eua 5.2 quake [1]

There is no tsunami threat for Tonga following a magnitude 5.2 earthquake located 74km south of 'Eua at 2:18pm, according to a Tonga Met advisory issued at 2:30pm (+14hrs UTC).

Origin time:   02:18pm on 15 December 2016 LT 

Coordinates: Lat: 21.85S Lon: 174.5W

Depth:         9km

Magnitude: 5.2

Location: 74km SouthEast of ‘Eua

"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters above, it was confirmed that NO tsunami wave was generated.

"Based on information above from the Tonga Geology Seismic Unit and Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC), this event is unlikely to affect Tonga," the Tonga Meteorology Office reported.

They stated that the magnitude 5.2 is provisional and may be increased or decreased as more seismic data becomes available.

The earthquake was slightly felt in Nuku'alofa.
