Former Wallabies winger, Cooper Vuna, was unable to inspire Tonga’s Sevens team at the Monaco Sevens last weekend, missing out on the last qualifying spot for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Vuna was named vice captain of the Tonga Sevens squad last Saturday and Sunday as they hoped to claim the last spot available but came away finishing tenth.

The Tongans were placed in Pool A and lost all three games against Samoa 26-0, Zimbabwe 21-14 and Ireland 31-12, missing out on a quarterfinal spot.

However, they reached the Challenge Trophy final by winning against South Korea 41-7, Uruguay 33-12 but lost in the finals to Zimbabwe 31-5.

The Monaco Sevens winner, Spain, upset the top seeds Samoa 22-18 in an exciting final to book their place in Rio.

Interim Chief Executive of the Tongan Rugby Unio, Fe’ao Vunipola, said the team will learn and move forward.

World Rugby Chairman, Bernard Lapasset, said rugby was the winner throughout a captivating final qualifier weekend.

“All the teams showed the very best of our sport and its character-building values at the Monaco Sevens.”

“We can now look forward to a game-changing Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which will enable rugby to reach and inspire new audiences worldwide,” said Lapasset.

The Rio Olympic Sevens will comprise of Spain, Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Great Britain, Argentina, USA, France, Kenya, Japan, Australia and hosts Brazil.
