New water supply systems for the villages of Vaipoa, Hihifo and Falehau on the remote island of Niuatoputapu were commissioned on Wednesday, 22 June.
The projects costing more than $500,000 pa’anga were funded by Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects and handed over by the Japanese Ambassador Mr Yukio Numata at Hihifo.
The new systems include a 5000GL water tank and a solar pump for Vaipoa, two solar pumps and pump house for Hihifo, and a 5000GL water tank with solar and diesel pumps for Falehau.
HE Mr Yukio Numata said the projects were designed as a solution for Niuatoputapu where it is more difficult to attain energy resources than in other regions of Tonga.
“I am happy that the Japanese Embassy was able to assist the people on this beautiful island once again by providing clean and safe water, a vital element for human life,” he said.
The Minister of Internal Affairs and Niuas People’s Representative to Parliament Hon Fe’ao Vakata thanked the Government of Japan for their generous support.
