A report on Climate Financing and Risk Governance Assessment CFRGA for Tonga, was launched by Tatafu Moeaki, the CEO for Tonga’s Ministry of Finance and National Planning, at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre, Monday 30 May.
The 152 pages report outlines the Tonga government’s plan to improve its disaster risk management activities so that it could respond effectively to climate change impacts.
It offers a comprehensive picture of how much climate change financial support Tonga needs, and it is anticipated that it should also put Tonga in a strong position to access Climate Change Funding.
The report emphasised Tonga’s vulnerability to climate change, geohazards, including earthquakes, volcanic activity, tsunami, landslides, cyclones and tropical storms.
It also clearly reiterated significant future impacts on Tonga’s economy, which would could worsen by a range of additional climate change phenomena, including sea level rise, increases in temperature, changes in rainfall and ocean acidification.
The Climate Financing and Risk Governance Assessment report for Tonga was launched following the opening of the Board Meeting of the Pacific Risk Resilience Programme on 30 June. The Board meeting with an UNDP representative and representatives from other Pacific Islands countries runs from 30 May to 2 June.
