NFL enlists Tongans in new draft [1]

This month, all 32 teams of America’s National Football League (NFL) announced their new rosters and recruitment of college football players for the 2016 season. Among the new recruits are at least five players of Tongan heritage. The NFL completed its official 2016 NFL Draft on April 30.

Bronson Kaufusi (24) of Brigham Young University was drafted to the Baltimore Ravens. The Utah born defensive end was a star player for the BYU Cougars. He also played for the BYU basketball team. Bronson is known for his devotion, having served a two year mission in New Zealand and was a nominee for the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works award last year. Bronson is the son of former NFL player Steve Kaufusi of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Halapoulivaati Vaitai (22) from Haltom, Texas ,was drafted to the Philadelphia Eagles. He played as an offensive lineman for Texas Christian University. Standing 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighing in at 145 kilos, Halapoulivaati, or “Big V”, is known for his size. Big V is the son of Takilivi and Shirley Vaitai.

Ronnie Stanley (22) from Las Vegas, was drafted to the Baltimore Ravens. He played as an offensive tackle for Notre Dame University and was the winner of the 2015 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award. He is of Tongan and African-American Heritage.

David Moala (23) from Inglewood, California, was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent. He played as a defensive lineman for Utah State University. He is the brother of Fili Moala, a defensive tackle for the Houston Texans.

Soma Vainuku (23) from Eureka, California was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent. He played Fullback for the University of Southern California. Soma is of Tongan-Samoan heritage.
