Catholic Church performs Good Friday carrying of the cross [1]

A dramatic Good Friday procession gathered a crowd in Nuku'alofa today as members of the Catholic Church marched along Hala Vuna from Hala Alamea to the St Mary’s Cathedral, Ma’ufanga.

The march commemorated the "Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross". The event was dramatized: a white robed carrier of the cross wearing a crown of thorns was whipped, kicked and punched by companions dressed as Roman soldiers. Along the way as groups dressed in biblical costumes stopped the march to pray and to recite verses from the bible.

The slow procession stopped the traffic along Hala Vuna for a while, gathering crowds as they moved along Hala Vuna toward St Mary’s Cathedral.

Easter Holiday is a long weekend holiday in Tonga, starting today, 25 March.
