Tonga finally got all its athletes to the Pacific Games 2015 in Papua New Guinea today, when the remaining 35 who were stranded in Nandi since Saturday, 11 July secured seats on a flight to Port Moresby this morning.

The Tonga Amateur Sport Association (TASA) office in Nuku’alofa, confirmed today that Tonga's 255 athletes and officials has all reached Papua New Guinea.

The games that started on 4 July will end on 18 July.

Of the 56 Tongan athletes (not 59 as we earlier reported) who arrived in Nadi on Saturday on a charter flight from Tonga, only 21 secured tickets on an onward flight to Port Moresby that day, while the remaining 35 remained in Nadi until this morning.

The TASA spokesperson said that the 21 athletes who arrived in Port Moresby on Saturday, included 17 netball players and four athletes, just in time for their competition today.

The spokesperson said that the 56 stranded athletes were appropriately compensated by the Ministry of Finance. The 21 who transited through Nadi on Saturday were given $75 (TOP) each and the remaining 35 who remain in Nadi until this morning were given $450 (TOP).

As of today, Tonga has won three gold medals, all from swimming, by ‘Amini Fonua; and two bronze medals, one from the men seven-a-side Rugby and the other bronze of nine-a-side in Rugby League.
