Tongatapu holds highest number of new voters [1]

Tongatapu recorded more than 5000 people out of over 8000 newly registered voters to vote in Tonga’s upcoming General Election on November 27, 2014.

After the voters registration ended on September 16, the Electoral Commission recorded a total of 50,405 people, including 8,175 new voters.

The Commissioner and Supervisor of Election, Pita Vuki said today that Tongatapu had 5784 voters, followed by Vava'u with 1225, Ha’apai with 669 and ‘Eua with 299.

The  nothern islands of Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou recorded a total of 198 new voters.

He said the majority of the 8,175 new voters were young people between the ages of 21-35.

In the  2010 election there were 42,000 registered voters, 51% women and 49% men; these percentage allocation remains the same for this coming election, said Pita.

The final electoral roll was published last week on Monday, September 22 in preparation for the Writ of Election to be issued by King Tupou VI on Tuesday, September 30.

Persons who turn 21 after the registration closing date can register before November 13 when the supplementary roll is published.

The nomination of candidates will be held for two-days on October 23-24. There will be 169 polling stations in the 17 consituencies.
