1. JOURNALIST – staff position based in Nuku'alofa, Tonga

An opportunity to join a newsroom in Tonga. We are looking for a journalist with the ability to write clearly, take good photos and have a good knowledge of local media and social media, with a genuine interest in the community.

A driver's licence is essential.

You will need to have good news sense and general knowledge, to produce content for Matangi Tonga Online – Tonga's leading news website.

This position would suit an experienced journalist or someone with relevant tertiary qualifications looking to further a career in the industry.

Matangi Tonga Online plays a vital role in delivering quality independent journalism and information online, and connecting advertisers to our audiences.

We work in Nuku'alofa – and serve a world-wide audience interested in Tongan news, receiving about 3 million page views to readers annually. Our archives hold over 15,000 articles and over 48,000 images. Our Matangi Tonga masthead was established in 1986, serving Tonga with quality journalism for 39 years.

The successful applicant will:

  • Provide examples of competence in writing balanced, accurate news reports;
  • Show proven skills in writing for online audiences and ability to meet tight deadlines;
  • Show initiative in generating story ideas or a diverse Tongan and international English-speaking audience.
  • Have the ability to work with a small team.

Bi-lingual Tongan and English languages, an advantage.

2. Sports Reporter, based in Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Matangi Tonga is looking for a competent Sports Reporter to file daily sports reports, updates and interviews.

The role may work remotely, but will involve some Saturday and evening work. The successful applicant wil demonstrate:

  • an ability to write clearly in English for an international audience;
  • have a genuine interest in sports;

Certificates from recognised journalism training programmes an advantage.

Bi-lingual Tongan and English languages, an advantage.

3. Cadet Journalist, staff position based in Nuku'alofa, Tonga

An opportunity to join a newsroom in Tonga. We are looking for a new graduate to help produce content for Matangi Tonga Online – Tonga's leading news website.

The successful applicant wil demonstrate:

  • an ability to write clearly
  • have a good knowledge of local media and social media
  • show a genuine interest in the community.
  • certificates from recognised journalism training programmes an advantage

A driver's licence is essential.
