The New Zealand Government has committed $40,000 (NZD) to Tonga's Red Cross to purchase guttering kits for over 500 homes in Ha'apai for clean rainwater collection.

The Secretary-General of the Tonga Red Cross Society Sione Taumoefolau and Peter Shackleton the New Zealand Deputy High Commissioner signed an agreement for the funding to purchase 375 guttering kits, on 14 February in Nuku'alofa.

Sione said they are grateful to the New Zealand government for their continuous support in the disaster response after Tropical Cyclone Ian. The funding is to support the provision of clean water to affected communities in Ha’apai.

Tonga Red Cross staff and volunteers had conducted an assessment of houses in Ha'apai and identified more than 500 homes hat need guttering, to ensure they can collect clean water when it rains.

The Cyclone Ian battered the island on January 11.
