December is the wedding season in Tonga and last week Thursday December 12 became the busiest day of nuptials for the year, when 24 marriages were registered in Nuku'alofa.

The Registry Office in Nuku’alofa reported there were 22 marriages registered today Thursday 19 December.

The Acting CEO of the Ministry of Justice Folau Lokotui told Matangi Tonga, that December has always been a popular month for couples to get married just before Christmas. At the beginning of this month the registry has been extra busy with marriage registries on Thursdays - “the most popular day which is considered a lucky day to tie the knot,” he said.

A former registrar, Lokotui said he recalled one year when he issued over 30 marriage registries on the last Thursday in December before closing for the Christmas holidays.

One of the many weddings held today was Seini Vikilani and Moala Mafi who tied the knot at the Church of Tonga (Hou’eiki) Kilikali in Nuku'alofa.

The final working day for the Government of Tonga for 2013, this year is tomorrow Friday 20 December.
