M6.4 earthquake shakes Vava'u [1]

A M6.4 earthquake rattled Vava'u, in northern Tonga at 7:53am this morning, November 3.

The earthquake at the depth of 10km with its epicenter 152km ESE of Neiafu, was felt by people in Vava'u. A police officer at the Neiafu, Police Station, said that the tremor was not as strong as the last earthquake that was felt in Vava'u last year, "but this time it went on for about two minutes."

No damage has been reported.

The quake which was 345km NE of the Tongan capital, Nuku'alofa was not felt on the main island of Tongatapu.

Two lesser earthquakes followed in the same area with M5.6 recorded at 8:05am, and M5.2 at 8:13am local time, according to the USGS National Earthquake Information Centre.

They were in the area of the Tonga Trench, where the tectonic plates are moving faster than anywhere else on earth.
