Papua New Guinea dominated the final medal tally at the 2013 Pacific Mini-Games in Wallis and Futuna, which came to a close last week on September 12.

The 10-day regional tournament ended with 19 of 22 participating countries winning medals. Tonga was ranked 8^th with medals won in 15 sports, including 2 gold, 3 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Papua New Guinea collected medals in 67 sporting events including 21 gold, 23 silver and 23 bronze.

Tonga’s two gold medallists are Decathlon athlete Toutouofa Vea (22) and Heptathlon athlete Mafikovi Akanete (19). Bronze medals were  won in the Decathlon by Lars Fa'apoi (22) and in Heptathlon by Olivia Eteaki (20).

Tonga’s top runner, Heamatangi Tuivai (24) won two silver medals in the 400 metres sprint and 400 metres hurdles. Tuivai almost won gold in the 400 metres event, being only four mili-seconds behind Samoan Siologa Sepa. Ana Katil (18) won bronze in the 100 metres hurdles. Tonga also grabbed bronze in 4x400 metres relay.

Two bronze medals were won in Taekwondo by Pongi Ma’ake in the Men’s middleweight (80 kg) division and Finau Tonga in the Men’s heavyweight (87kg) dvision.

Two bronze medals were also won in weightlifting, Fe’ofo’ofani Takau in the Men 94kg division and17 year-old Apifo’ou student, Suliana Fate in the Women’s +75 kg division.

Medals were won in two team sports, Tonga settled for a bronze medal in the Rugby Sevens competition and a bronze medal in the 12,500 meter event of Va’a racing (outrigger canoe).
