7th contingent to Afghanistan at Fu'amotu Airport.
Tonga’s 7th contingent to Afghanistan left Tonga for the United Kingdom today, September 6 to undergo pre-deployment training for two-months.
The Tonga Defence stated that the 55 soldiers led by Acting Lt Colonel Carl Tu‘ivai would undertake their training at the Royal Airforce Station, Honington, in Suffolk, England.
The troops would be deployed for six-months to Afghanistan and serve alongside the British and Americans at Camp Bastion, Helmand Province.
The sixth contingent led by Navy Commander Sione Ulakai will return to Tonga after they hand over duties to this contingent.
The Acting Prime Minister Hon. Samiu Vaipulu farewelled the troops at Fua’amotu International Airport.
Tonga's deployment to support the NATO led mission, International and Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is expected to end in 2014.
