The Tongan men’s over-30’s tag rugby team successfully completed a British tour last week, after winning the 2013 London Tag Rugby Championships and defeating Great Britain’s over-30’s men’s tag rugby team in a one-off exhibition match.
Team Tonga played its first game on August 15 with a pre-tournament match-up against the “London Residents over-30s” team. Despite a heavy 8 – 3 defeat to the London Residents, Team Tonga re-gathered itself and two days later swept its way through to the finals of the 2013 London Tag Team Tournament. The tournament ended in a thrilling final, when Tonga edged the home side “Tag Me Maybe” 2 – 1.
On August 20, three days after winning the championship, the Tongan over-30’s team took on Great Britain’s national men’s over-30s tag rugby team. The international fixture turned out to be a great victory for Tongan sport with Tonga thrashing the Brits 8 – 4.
Tonga’s captain Moana Mausia was awarded player of the series for Tonga.
