Drivers injured in car thefts [1]

Three cars were stolen from the Nuku'alofa area early on Saturday May 11, in separate incidents, and a driver was admitted to hospital with serious injuries after one of the stolen vehicles crashed, Tonga Police reported.

The car was stolen from Kapeta, and the owner Seini Movete woke up at about 8:00am Saturday morning to find the car missing. The car was later found at about 4:30pm involved in an accident at Makeke.  The driver was seriously injured and taken to hospital. Police are still investigating this case.

Another vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was stolen after the driver had picked up two men from the road. Police received a report about 4:29am on May 11 that the driver was assaulted and thrown out of the car at Ha’ateiho. The driver had injuries to his head but was in a stable condition. The car was found at Sopu.

In another case, a car belonging to Mr Lee of Korea was stolen at about 3:30am from central Nuku'alofa. The driver was sleeping with the key attached, and when he woke up the key was gone. He left the vehicle and went home to get the spare key. When he returned the vehicle had disappeared. The Police retrieved the car later on Saturday afternoon from Sopu.
