Two Tongan Police Constables were charged with manslaughter this afternoon, in relation to the death of a 21-year-old man after a party at Vaini early this morning.

Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee said the two male police constables in their 20's were remanded to appear at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court, on Monday November 19.

He said the party was held last night in which people drank. There were four off-duty police officers at that party, and the victim had an argument with some other people, including three of the off-duty police officers and there was an altercation, he said.

Police started inquiries this morning and the two officers were arrested and charged. But there were four off-duty police officers present at the party and investigation continued, he said.

The victim, a civilian, had yet to be identified. He was pronounced dead from head injuries upon arrival at Vaiola Hospital.

"This is not what we need at all, and my only message to the public is that we would continue to treat police officers like anyone else. And if police officers offend they are subject to the same law as everyone else."

He said there was no suggestion of any weapon used during the fight.

This incident comes after three months after five police officers were charged with manslaughter in regards to the death of New Zealand Police officer Kali Fungavaka who was assaulted in custody, on August 17.
