Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala with the Minister of Agriculture, Hon Sangstar Saulala

The first Royal Agricultural Show 2012 was opened by Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala at Lea'aetohi grounds in Pangai on Friday, October 5.

'Eleni Fatiki Tu'i an Information Officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries said, the show was a success as there were up to 500 participants who displayed crops, traditional Tongan foods, seafood, fish and handmade handicrafts during the one-day event.

Paula Kolo Finau was awarded a special prize for the Best overall farmer during competitions at the event.

She said hundreds of people turned out at to view the displays, including the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga Lord Fakafanua, Governor of Ha'apai and the Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries Hon Sangstar Saulala.

The show provided an opportunity for farmers, fishermen and those who make handicrafts to display traditional Tongan foods, handmade handicrafts, seafood, fish and locally made products. It also encourages the continuation of these important sectors in ensuring food security for the people of Tonga, she said.

King Tupou VI will open a one-day show in 'Eua on October 12. The king will also open Tongatapu's two-day show on October 19 at the Manamou'i Grounds at 'Atele. There is no show for Vava'u this year.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Industries show was a regular event in Tonga in the past. The shows were revived last year and held in Tongatapu, Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua.
