Homicide investigation continues [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, October 2, 2012 - 18:05.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

Tonga's Police Commissioner did not expect any more people would be charged in relation to the death of New Zealand Police Officer Kali Fungavaka in Tonga, but he did not rule out the possibility as the homicide investigation continues.

To date six male accused, including five Tongan police officers and one detainee, have each been charged with manslaughter.

The three police officers included the supervising officer Inspector Kelepi Hala'ufia with four police constables Manu Tu'ivai,Tevita Vakalahi, Salesi Maile, and Fatai Faletau. The detainee is Semisi Kalisitiane Manu.

Commissioner Grant O'Fee said this afternoon, the incident had not affected the operation and effectiveness of the Tonga Police. "But it has been a terrible state of affairs for me and my staff to realise that five of our co-workers have been charged with manslaughter," he said.

"At the end it does not matter whether they are police officers or not because they are the people we have chosen after evaluating the evidence to face trial on these matters and that is how it should be," he said.

Work was progressing with the Solicitor General's office as they helped to prepare files for the prosecution.

"We have got a long way to go in regards to restoring public confidence after this incident but a significant step is that we have placed our own staff before the court. If I was presiding over a police organisation that had no integrity and was utterly corrupt we would have no police officers facing charges at all," he said.

Youth suicide

At today's press briefing, the commissioner said that Police had also investigated the death of a 15-year-old who was found dead in Ha'apai on Saturday September 29. An inquest had declared the death as a suicide, the Commissioner said.

Police Women's Conference

Meanwhile, a third Tonga Police Women's Advisory Network Annual Conference will be held on October 4-5 at the Basilica in Nuku'alofa.

Deputy Police Commissioner Le'o Soakai, responsible for human resources, finance and resource management, the highest Tonga police rank held by a woman, said the theme of the conference is "promoting changes", in the view that women can lead the changes to make a difference in the workplace.

She said they have 86 women working in police, and 74 would attend the conference, including members from the outer island.

The women will also hold a special operation on Friday night October 5, starting from 8pm to 2am in Nuku'alofa to police the bars and other places.

"Our women will be at the Central Police station, some will be out on the streets to do traffic work while others will show their friendly faces in the bars. This is to assist us in developing our operational skills in the workplace," she said.
