Tonga's National Day was celebrated at the Expo 2012 Yeosu, South Korea with the hoisting of the Tongan flag and the playing of the national anthem at the Expo Hall on August 6.

Tonga's national day is actually November 4, but at Expo the National Day celebration recognized the participation of various countries from throughout the world in the Expo 2012 Yeosu, which was officially opened on Saturday, May 12 and will close on Sunday, August 12.

A Tongan delegation was led by the Minister for Commerce, Tourism and Labour, Dr  Viliami Uasike Latu.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, Tourism and Labour said that the theme for the Expo 2012 Yeosu is "The Living Ocean and Coast" and the Tongan delegation to the Expo was selected from across the Private Sector.

The Tongan delegation included, Tatafu Moeaki, the CEO for the Ministry of Commerce, Tourism and Labour, Miss Heilala 2012-13; Saia Moehau and Kololiana Naufahu from Tourism Associations; Minolu Nishi from Squash Growers Association; Tricia Emberson, from the Fisheries Industry, and 'Etuate Lavulavu from the National Cultural Center.

He said that though it was important for Tonga to exhibit handicrafts and cultural materials at the Expo, but it was more relevant for Tonga to exhibit fisheries and agricultural products that we can export to Korea.

He said that travel expenses of the delegation were partially paid for by the Korean government, the Tongan government and by the delegates themselves.
