A new constitution for the establishment of a new Tonga Rugby Union Inc. was unanimously adopted in a special meeting of the Tonga Rugby Football Union (TRFU) on Saturday 28 April.

The passing of the new constitution for the establishment of a new Rugby Union to administer Rugby in Tonga was hailed as a major achievement, after years of feuding among rugby personalities and rugby clubs. The International Rugby Board had warned the Tongan government that if Tonga could not get its act together they would cut off all assistance toward the development of Rugby in Tonga, and if the dispute continued that Tonga might eventually get expelled from the IRB.

The Interim Deputy Chairman of the TRFU, 'Aminiasi Kefu, said that the passing of the new constitution with amendments was a "unanimous decision",  by more than 60 representatives of rugby sub-unions, Tongatapu rugby clubs, Life Board Members, Interim Directors, and former TRFU members who attended the meeting.

'Aminiasi said that another special meeting of the TRFU tomorrow, May 1 would approve the amendments to the new constitution, and once the constitution was formalized and registered, copies would be distributed to the public. 

The process of restructuring the Tonga Rugby Union ends on May 26, after the new board of directors will be elected to take over the administration of Tongan Rugby.
