THREE young Tongan boxers have returned home with a medal each, a gold, a silver and a bronze medal from the Oceania Boxing Tournament, held in Canberra from August 6-9.

Rising star 20-year-old Uaine Fa defeated his 28-year-old Russian opponent to win the gold medal in the Super Heavyweight division.

The two other young boxers Viliami Mahe Latu (17) won the silver medal in the Welterweight round; while Heamasi Sekona (17) came home with the bronze medal in the Lightweight.

Coach Toni Fulilangi told Matangi Tonga on August 24, he was very pleased with the achievements of the young men who are all amateur boxers.

Uaine Fa

Uaine is a rising boxer for Tonga since in the three rounds of their encounter he overtook a 28 year old Russian opponent who had much more experience with over 100 fights to his name.

Uaine who resides and trains in New Zealand is considered to be a strong medal contender for Tonga in the Commonwealth Games to be held India in October this year.

Viliami Mahe

The silver medallist, Viliami Mahe, is another medal contender for Tonga in the Commonwealth Games, the coach said.

The team arrived in Tonga on August 23 and met with Prime Minister Hon Dr Feleti Sevele and other members of parliament who congratulated them on their achievements.

The Tongan boxing team to the Oceania Boxing Tournament was accompanied by the President of the Boxing Committee, Noble Lasike, who is also the Chairman of the Tonga Legislative Assembly's Whole House Committee.
