Tongans drunk driving [1]

Editor,

I read your article regarding Tonga's new "tough" laws against alcohol (over) consumption. Furthermore. It was interesting to read Tonga's police training and implementation of new breath testing instruments to combat drunk driving in the kingdom.

While this is a worthy legal enterprise, you failed to mention in your report the legal threshold (legal limit) under the new law that determine a motorist is legally drunk and unlawful to operate a vehicle. I venture to guess, and I would not be surprised if there is no threshold/limit specified in the new "drunk-driving" law. And if this is the case, a legal loophole; are the lawmakers protecting the lawmakers?, while disguising their exercise of law (futility).

Editor's Note - Our story, Breath tests start December 6, clearly stated - "It does not take a lot of alcohol for a person's breath to exceed 150 micrograms per litre of breath so my advice is if you are going to drink don't drive. Make other arrangements to get home safely not only will this save you getting prosecuted it may also save someone's life," said Police Commander, Chris Kelley.
