Two Tongan swimmers at World Champs [1]

TONGAN swimmers Amini Fonua and Ifa Paea are currently competing in the World Championships in Shanghai, China with their sights set on the 2012 London Olympics.

Amini (21) who lives in the United States was 7th in the 50m breaststroke at the 2010 Commonwealth Games while Ifa (21) who lives in Australia ranked 3rd in butterfly in Australia when he was 14 years old.

The Secretary of the Tonga Swimming Association Michael O said the championship is the qualifying meet for the 2011 London Olympics and Tonga would have both men as representatives under a wild card entry.

But the wildcards many not be needed depending on their times in China as they are both close to qualifying times, he said.

South Pacific Games

Amini and Ifa would also be representing Tonga in the 2011 South Pacific Games in New Caledonia together with woman swimmer Charissa Panuve.

Charissa was 6th at the 2010 Oceania Championships in this event and will be swimming in the 5km Open water swim.

At the same another Tonga female swimmer Irene Prescott from Melbourne will compete at the Commonwealth Youth Games at the Isle of Man.
