Touch Champion 2011: The Nukunuku Wildcats [1]

THE Nukunuku Wildcats men team continued to dominate Touch Rugby in Tonga after beating the Nuku'alofa Lions 7-3 at the 'Apifo'ou College's ground last Saturday 20 August.

It was the second season in a row for the Nukunuku Wildcats to be Tonga's national Touch champion.

The final show down between the Wildcats and the Lions was pretty even during the first half, the score was 3-3 at the break. In the second half the Wild Cats took control of the game to score four tries to non by the Lions.

Second prize of the mixed went to Vaitaseni.

The first prize of the mixed went to the Nukunuku Wild Cats.

Other matches that were played on Saturday, were the Team Water Vai against the Ocean Star Youth for the third place in the Men Division. It was a very close encounter, but at the end the Ocean Star Youth snatched the victory by one point, and won the game 9-8.

In the Mixed Division, the Nuku'alofa Lions and the Dateline Shipping fought it out for the third place and the Lions thrashed the Dateline Shipping 12-2.

The winner of the Mixed Division was decided by two Nukunuku teams, the Wild Cats and Vaitaseni, and Vaitaseni won 6-5. The score was five all full time, so they went into drop off overtime, with a player from each side leaving the field untill a try is scored. Vaitaseni scored after both teams were reduced to 4 players each.

A total of five clubs participated in the tournament, with ten teams competing in each division.
