Tonga's 'Ikale Tahi knocked out Japan's Brave Blossoms 31-18 at the Northland Events Centre, Whangarei last night, 22 September.
The game was a must-win for both teams to stay in the competition, but at the end the 'Ikale Tahi snatched victory, in despite of Japan's disputed first try, which was clear from the television replay that the player had not reached the try line.
The game was played at a very fast pace with a lighter Japanese outfit trying to spin the ball out wide whenever they had the chance, but the 'Ikale Tahi stuck to its game plan and took control.
Tonga's 31 points came from two tries in the first half, by Viliami Ma'afu, and Tukulua Lokotui, and a third try in the second half by Fetu'u Vainikolo. Kurt Morath added on 16 points from two tries conversions and four converted penalties.
The 'Ikale Tahi's victory, their first of this year's Rugby World Cup was what the fans have been waiting for. In down town Nuku'alofa last night there was an explosion of cheering, screaming and the beeping of vehicles horns when a Tongan player kicked out the ball to end the game.
The celebration went on for the rest of the night as late comers to the celebration made their presence known by driving through town, playing loud music, honking their horns and waving the Tongan flags.
But back to the scoreboard, Tonga must beat France to have a chance of qualifying for the next Rugby World Cup. The 'Ikale Tahi has beaten France before 20-16 at Teufaiva Stadium, Nuku'alofa on June 16, 1999.
